Andrea G. Peña, 89, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, October 29, 2023, at Sagecrest Alzheimer’s Care Center in San Angelo after battling Alzheimer’s disease for 13 years. The disease eventually robbed her of her memory of family but not of her love and care for other residents and caregivers at Sagecrest that became her family the last two years of her life. Our family would like to extend our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the loving, caring and gifted staff of Buckner Sagecrest for their wonderful care of our matriarch. A special thanks to Dr. Albert Reyes, President and CEO, Buckner International, and friend of the family for his leadership of this great Texas Baptist Enterprise.
Andrea was born on November 30, 1933, in Slaton, Texas to Francisca Quirino and Julian Gonzales who had immigrated to the United States and began their new life as U. S. citizens in Terlingua, Texas and eventually made their way to Ballinger, Texas to raise three boys, Gabino, Isabel and Rafael and one girl, Andrea. She loved and respected her brothers tremendously throughout their childhood and as married adults.
On June 3, 1950, she married the love of her life, Carlos Pena and began her path to becoming a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. However, the most important decision she made in their early marriage was to accept Christ as her Lord and Savior which changed the trajectory of her and dad’s marriage and impacted the way they raised their boys, Lorenzo, Henry and Lloyd. Today, our family know Andrea as a Christian mom, grandmother and great grandmother loving her family unconditionally! She has been a caregiver for our children and their children, as well as for the children of friends. She was a woman with a big heart. She was selfless and always met people at their point of need. She has been the strength and support for our family for the last 62 years.
Andrea was preceded in death by her loving husband, Carlos Pena, her parents and three brothers, and her son, Henry. She is survived by her son, Lorenzo and his wife Santa of Grand Prairie, her daughter-in-law, Ernestina Peña, of San Angelo, her son, Lloyd and Hope of San Angelo; her grandchildren Jeremiah Peña and his wife Elizabeth of Watauga, Tx, Jason Peña and his wife Allison of Grand Prairie, Tx., Allison Knight and her husband Justin of San Angelo, Audra Peña of San Angelo, Adrian Peña and his wife Cady of Carbon, Tx., Timothy Peña, Thomas Peña and his wife Tiffany, Anthony Peña and his fiancé Emery Elkins; great grandchildren, Sorin Peña, Rileigh Peña and fiancé Josh Vidal, Nathaniel Peña, Kaya Knight, Ruby Peña, Hank Peña, Amos Peña, Juniper Peña, Valentina Peña, and Kaila Peña.
Family would also like to extend a special thanks and appreciation to the staff of Hospice of San Angelo for the care given to Andrea on her last days.
