Bernice Mary Huff Hammerton of San Angelo, Texas, passed away on August 9, 2025, peacefully at her home. She was born January 27, 1927, to Nicholas and Mary Haber Huff of Pittsburgh, PA.
Bernice was born the youngest of 9 children. Growing up, she spent many hours listening to sports with her father on the radio prompting a passion for following many teams in Football, Baseball, and Tennis. As a child, she attended catholic schools in Pittsburgh. She graduated from John the Baptist High School. Her first job was at the 5 & Dime store then worked for the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, PA. A place that perfectly reflected her lifelong love for books. As a young lady, some of her favorite pastimes were spent at the Saturday afternoon movies and on picnics with family and friends. It was at a picnic that she met Bruce Charles Hammerton. The couple married on the 10th of July 1954, at St. Lawrence Catholic Church in Pittsburgh, PA. Bruce’s military career took them to California, Germany, Maryland, and Texas. While stationed in Germany the couple welcomed 2 sons, William (Bill) 1956 and Robert (Bob) 1957. After being transferred to Texas in 1970, the couple made San Angelo their home. Bernice enjoyed living in San Angelo and found her career home at Tom Green County Library.
Bernice is survived by her children: Bill (Donna) Hammerton and Bob Hammerton. Her Grandchildren: Kimberly Hammerton, Kyle (Kaitlyn) Hammerton, Crystal (Ryan) Stanford and Lauren (Neil) Rozell. Her Great-Grandchildren: Kaylee & Hawke Hammerton, Kamryn & Kallie Stanford, and Alyssa & Emma Rozell. Bernice is also survived by loving relatives in Pennsylvania. She was preceded in death by her husband Bruce, her parents, 5 brothers, and 3 sisters.
