Jim Strother, Jr.

Jim Glenn Strother, Jr, 82, went to be his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Thursday, August 31st, at his home in Allen, TX. There will be a visitation at Harper Funeral Home on Monday, September 4, from 6pm to 8pm. Family burial service on Tuesday, September 5, at 10am at Fairmount Cemetery with a memorial service to celebrate Jim’s life on Tuesday at 1pm at Johnson Street Church of Christ in San Angelo. Jim was born June 24, 1935. The son of James and Carrie Strother of San Angelo. He was raised in San Angelo where he attended school from 1st grade through Junior College at Angelo State. He received his degree in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 1958 before beginning his career in the oil industry. He began his work life with Magnolia Oil (later Mobil). Jim then moved to Tenneco Oil Company in 1963 where he worked in many capacities in engineering and management for 33 years. He met his wife of 58 years, Estelle Prather, in Snyder, TX. They were married on June 29, 1959. Jim and Estelle and their family lived in various locations in Texas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, Louisiana, and Calgary, Alberta. In his moves he relied on his Church of Christ family in many ways. He was very active in church activities and often in leadership roles in the congregations. After retirement, Jim and Estelle moved back to San Angelo and enjoyed traveling and seeing God’s creation. They were members at the Johnson Street Church of Christ for over 20 years. Jim was an avid outdoorsman who loved fishing, hiking, and looking for arrowheads. He was beloved for his sharp wit, contagious laugh and his joy of life. His children and grandchildren will especially miss him around the game table and will fondly remember their mostly unsuccessful attempts to beat PaPa at whatever game they were playing. He is survived by his loving wife, Estelle, of Allen, TX where they have lived for the past 5 years. He is also survived by his three sons, Steve and Ruth Ann Strother of Allen, TX, Scott and Reola Strother of Bridgeport, TX and Sander and Gail Strother of Bakersfield, CA. Seven grandchildren, Brandon and Tracey Strother of Rosenberg, TX, Patrick and Rosie Strother of Waco, TX, Alyson and Eric Locke of Savannah, TX, John and Dylana Strother of San Diego, CA, Luke Strother of Bakersfield, CA, Nathaniel Strother and Anna Strother of Bridgeport, TX. Four great grandchildren, Brooklyn and Peyton Strother of Rosenberg, TX, Jonah Locke of Savannah, TX, and Marlee Strother of San Diego, CA. He is also survived by his sister, Carolyn Hover and her husband Chuck, of Houston, TX and many nieces and nephews and cousins.
