Joe Henderson

Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Joseph (Joe) William Henderson Sr., passed away peacefully on September 19, 2026.

Joe was born on February 11, 1938, to Porter and Faustine Henderson. He graduated from San Angelo High School in 1956 and went on to complete his education at Texas Tech University, graduating in 1960.

Joe married the love of his life, Su Ann Schmidt, on August 29, 1959. Joe and Su spent 67 wonderful years together. Throughout their marriage, they enjoyed traveling the world with John Deere and spending time with family and friends. However, some of their favorite memories were made at their ranch in Knickerbocker, Texas. Together, they raised two sons, Joseph (Joey) Henderson Jr. and Jeb Henderson.

Joe started working at a young age at Porter Henderson Implement Company. Following the death of his father, Porter Henderson Sr., Joe took over the family business at just 25 years old. Over the many decades that followed, he took great pride in running a business where customers and employees alike were treated as family. Under Joe’s leadership, and later under Joey and Jeb, Porter Henderson Implement Company earned the deep respect of farmers and ranchers across the Concho Valley and West Texas.

An avid outdoorsman, Joe shared many adventures with his childhood friends, Terry Albert and J.T. Arthur. Some of his fondest memories were spent along the Middle Concho River at Skipper Duncan’s with his hound dogs, or during long days fishing alongside his good friends, Johnny Duncan, Larry Abbott, and R.D. Barron. For Joe, a perfect day consisted of a good fishing hole, Flatt and Scruggs on the radio, and great friends to share it with. He passed his passion for fishing, hunting, and bluegrass music down to both of his sons and all of his grandchildren.

Throughout his life, Joe was heavily involved in the San Angelo community and believed deeply in the importance of giving back. A longtime member of Grace Christian Church (formerly First Christian Church), he faithfully served his congregation as a Deacon, Elder, and member of the Church Board. He also served as President of the San Angelo Rotary Club, President of the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce, Trustee of Shannon West Texas Memorial Hospital, President of the Southwest Hardware and Implement Association, National Director of the North American Equipment Dealers Association, President of the Angelo State University Ex-Students Association, and Chairman and Life Member of the San Angelo Salvation Army Advisory Board.

Later in life, Joe found great joy in spending time with his grandchildren. He loved taking them on hunting and fishing trips, teaching them important life lessons, and cheering them on at all of their school and sporting events.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Porter and Faustine Henderson; his mother and father-in-law, Carl and Addie Schmidt; his brother, Porter Henderson Jr.; his sister-in-law, Mary Henderson Williams; and his grandson, Hayden Henderson.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Su Ann Henderson; his sons, Joseph (Joey) Henderson Jr. and wife Lezlye, and Jeb Henderson and wife Genny; six grandchildren: Colton Henderson and wife Megan, Amy Ewald and husband Taylor, Beau Henderson, Will Henderson and wife Kalyn, Sarah Coleman and husband Kevin, and Lance Henderson; and five great-grandchildren: McKenna Henderson, Porter, Adeline, and Crockett Ewald, and Harlow Henderson. He is also survived by a special niece, Laura Wisdom and husband Whip, and nephew, Wyatt Henderson and wife Karen.

Joe was known to all for his warm smile, generous heart, and gentle spirit. He never met a stranger and had a truly caring soul. He lived his life with endless kindness and dedication to serving others—a devotion that extended even in death through the donation of his body to the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center for medical education and research. The world would truly be a better place if we all embodied a little bit more of Joe.

He was loved immeasurably and will be missed dearly by his family, friends, and the community he spent a lifetime supporting.

A memorial service celebrating Joe's life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at Grace Christian Church, located at 29 N. Oakes, San Angelo, Texas 76903.
