June Waddell, 84, passed away peacefully at her home on July 4, 2026. A long-time resident of San Angelo, June was the daughter of Alton and Mildred (Broadstreet) Gideon. Although we will most certainly miss her, we find comfort in knowing that she is no longer in pain. We are thankful for the memories that we will forever cherish.
June was employed as a dispatcher for the San Angelo Police Department where she met her husband, Merrell Waddell. They were married on June 23, 1965. Together they had three children: Kimberly, Karla, and Kerry.
Throughout her life in San Angelo, she held various jobs including Concho Drugstore, Peggy’s Playhouse (childcare center), Ethicon, SAISD where she served as a crossing guard, and assisted in the cafeteria (retired).
Upon retirement she was a nanny for Tom Porter and Anna Thomas. She also kept many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
June was preceded in death by her parents, Alton and Mildred Gideon, her husband of 56 years, Merrell Waddell, and her brother, Charles (Max) Gideon.
She leaves behind her children: Kimberly Elaine Waddell (Keith Mateo) of San Angelo, Texas, Karla Waddell Sexton (Dan) of Miles, Texas, Kerry Alton Waddell (Crystal) of San Angelo, Texas, and Richard Doggett (Terry) of Elgin, Texas. Her grandchildren include Tiffany Willison (Thad) of Katy, Texas, Brett Deans (Alexys), and Frances Waddell all of San Angelo, Texas, Kevin Waddell of Brady, Texas, Julie Casas of Austin, Texas, Michael Doggett of Houston, Texas, and Rachel Whatley of Little Rock, Arkansas, and many great grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
June was a force all her own with her quick wit and laughter that could fill any room. Her stories were the BEST, and she would tell them often and well. It really did not matter where she went, she always came back with something comical to share with family and friends. Often, they were about the shenanigans she and her friend, Mary Baily would get into, or the predicaments that she and her cousin, Judy Davis, would find
themselves in. She also loved spending time at the BINGO Hall or traveling to watch the NASCAR races with her special sister, Sharon. The two sisters were often called, “Lucy and Ethel.” June had an uncanny way of making ordinary days turn into an outrageous adventure. She was also a phenomenal cook and loved sharing what she prepared with others. June was a dynamic character in her own right. When meeting her, you would soon realize that you could never forget her. That is just the kind of person she was. She loved her family immensely and would do anything for them. June and her husband, Merrell created a home where everyone felt welcome. In fact, they would often open their home for anyone needing a place to stay. She opened not only her home, but her heart along with it. She was loyal and generous.
We will carry the memories of June with us forever… until we meet again.
“Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also.”
John 14:1-3
“Come to me, all who labor, and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
Matthew 11:28
