Larry Clifford Burt

Larry Clifford Burt, 83, of San Angelo passed away on Sunday, May 25, 2025, in San Angelo, TX. Larry was born June 17, 1941, in Salt Lake City Utah to Lester Clifford and Isabel Westergard Burt. The family moved to El Paso. TX when Larry was 5 years old. He attended El Paso schools and graduated from El Paso High School in 1959, always active in sports and music programs. He attended Lamar University in Beaumont, TX from 1959 – 1964, studying in both Mechanical Engineering and Business programs.

Larry met Esther Ruth Jimmerson at Lamar in September of 1960, and they were married in Beaumont, TX on January 18, 1964. Their love and union proved Larry’s point that “opposites do attract.”

In October 1965, in El Paso, TX Larry joined the Management program of S.S. Kresge Co., which became the Kmart Corporation. Proceeding up the corporate ladder included three promotions and moves in Southern California for the family and in 1971 Larry was promoted to his first managerial position in Phoenix, AZ before managing Kmart stores in Farmington, NM, San Antonio, TX, Fresno, CA, Redlands CA, and two stores in El Paso, TX before retiring in 1998. The family moved 13 times due to Larry’s job and left a trail of wonderful friendships, great neighbors, beautiful sights and numerous adventures in their wake. He and Esther chose San Angelo, TX for their retirement home and moved here in 2000.

Larry loved all sports and was a natural sportsman. One of his favorite places to be was on a golf course. He maintained a single digit handicap from 1998 – present. Vacations seemed to lead places with great courses. He loved to fish and play baseball, but his favorite hobby was to go dove hunting with his good friend, Billy Tims.

He also enjoyed traveling with Esther and his friends. After Esther finally convinced him to take her on a cruise, he found he loved it, and they enjoyed several different ports. He enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren grow and mature and worked with them to enjoy sports and the outdoors as he did.

Larry was a member of the First United Methodist Church in San Angelo, the Elks Lodge from 1973 to present, was President of the Farmington, NM, Civitan International Club in 1977, founded the Soup Kitchen Golf Open to benefit San Angelo Soup Kitchen, and the GB & BS Golf Tournament so he and his friends from TX and New Mexico could get together, play golf and tell tall tales twice a year.

Larry was preceded in death by his soul mate, best friend and loving wife of 60 years, Esther Burt. He was also preceded in death by his parents, brother, James Burt and sister-in-law Lynn Burt.

He is survived by his daughter, Dana Burt-Even; his son, Lance C. Burt; his grandchildren, Zachary Burt Even, Larry Colten Burt and Ashtyn Elizabeth Burt; his nieces, Leslie Akin and Karen Burt, of El Paso, TX and his faithful companion Leo.

A Celebration of Larry’s Life will be held on a later date to be determined.
