Louis Callaway "Cal" Hengst Jr.

February 25, 1953 — January 12, 2024

Cal was born to Margie and Cal Hengst Sr. in El Paso, Texas. Loving husband, father, and grandfather, Cal is survived by the love of his life, Pamela Meador Hengst; three sons, Noel and Brenna Hoff of Big Spring, Texas, Ashley Hoff of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Cal and Annie Hengst of Saint Louis, Missouri; 6 grandchildren; 3 sisters, Lelia and Johnny Foster, Marguerite and Jeff Lipton, Lisa and Cecil Lillard; and one incredibly spoiled goldendoodle, Daisy. Cal was a proud graduate of the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets, class of 1975, where he served as company commander Company L-2 and Lieutenant of the Ross Volunteers - the official Honor Guard of the Governor of Texas. After graduating from Texas A&M, Cal served his country in the Army as a field artillery officer stationed in Fort Sill, Oklahoma. He then returned home to San Angelo to help his father with the family business, Powell Glass & Mirror. Cal was an avid sportsman, traveling nationally for sporting clays tournaments, fishing and hunting trips - often with his lifelong friends Mike McAlpine and Roger Henjum of San Angelo. While Cal rarely landed the biggest fish or bagged the highest limit, he was always the first in line to clean up from the day. Cal loved mentoring youth and was heavily involved in Scouting, serving as Cub Master at Santa Rita Elementary through Assistant Scoutmaster of BSA Troop 363. He hiked 100+ miles through the mountains at Philmont Scout Ranch in New Mexico and was honored with Mentor pins at more than a dozen local Eagle Scout ceremonies. Cal’s family remembers him as a real Texan: he loved his family, watching the deer in Eldorado, a good ribeye, John Wayne, and the Dallas Cowboys. In lieu of flowers, please donate to Cal's favorite local charity, the Eldorado Game Association (PO Box 553, Eldorado, Texas 76936).
