Madolyn Powell Mertz, 94, of San Angelo, Texas, passed away in San Angelo on June 3, 2026. She was born October 3, 1931, to Virgil James and Johnnie Dell Powell.
Madolyn grew up in San Angelo and received her early education there before graduating from The Hockaday School. She went on to attend the University of Texas, where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.
She married Mort Mertz in San Angelo April 20, 1954, and together they made their home across west Texas, living near Arden, Big Lake, and Eldorado before returning to San Angelo. Madolyn devoted herself wholeheartedly to her faith and her family. A woman of deep conviction and quiet strength, she invested herself in the lives of her children and grandchildren — nurturing their education, instilling enduring values, and leaving an indelible mark on each of them. She was a longtime member of First Baptist Church in both Eldorado and San Angelo.
Madolyn is survived by her sons and their wives, Len and Trish, Mort and Susan, and Michael and Trina; and her daughter, Susan Slaughter. Her ten grandchildren are James Mertz (Atiah), Phillip Mertz, Louis Mertz (Jill), Madolyn Brinig (Kevin), Lawson Mertz (Millie), Will Slaughter (Lara), Len Slaughter (Kyann), Arden Mertz, Chase Mertz, and Wyatt Mertz. She is also survived by thirteen great-grandchildren, her twin sister, Marolyn Bean, and her brother, James Powell.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Mort Mertz; her daughter-in-law, Frances Mertz; and her son-in-law, William David “Dub” Slaughter.
A memorial service honoring her life and legacy will be held on Friday, June 5, 2026, at the First Baptist Church of San Angelo at 10:00 am.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to a charity of your choice.
