The bright lights of Margie’s cottage have dimmed, and a heavy silence has fallen over Front Street. Margie Hueber, the fierce, white-haired matriarch of her family, has turned in her poker chips and ridden into her final sunset.

Known to all as the beating heart of the Texas frontier, Margie was the definition of grit wrapped in velvet. With her sharp wit, trademark expressions, and an iron will, she stood as an equal among lawmen and outlaws alike in a wild land that tamed lesser souls.

For three decades, she held court as a single mother, pouring drinks, dispensing hard-earned wisdom, and keeping the peace as effectively as any shotgun. She was a fierce protector of the downtrodden, and a loyal companion to Cotton, Herb, and Larry.

Behind her fiery exterior lay a heart of gold. Margie proved that a woman could thrive on her own terms in a man's world, earning the fierce respect of every cowboy who ever crossed her threshold.

The boots of Texas walk a little slower today, and the prairie wind carries a mournful tune. The glass is raised, the piano is quiet, and the legend remains untouched.

May the trail rise up to meet you, Margie. Dodge City will never see another like you.

Margie Fay Hueber, 91, of San Angelo, Texas, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family. Margie was born on May 22, 1935, in San Angelo, Texas, to Leola and Austin Avants. 

She was preceded in death by her parents, Leola and Austin Avants; her first husband and father of her children, Edgar Eugene McAden “Cotton”; her second husband, Laurence Hueber; her beloved daughter, Margene McAden; her sister, Juanita Sue Blevins; her brother, Chester Glen Avants; and her sister, Willy Jean Avants.

Margie is lovingly survived by her sons, Wesley McAden and his wife, Elaine, and Johnny McAden and his wife, Debbie; her daughter, Linnea McAden; her sister, Cecil Joyce Newton and her husband, Milton; her brother, C.L. Avants; as well as numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, and extended family.
