Marla Kay Poynor

Marla Kay Poynor, our precious Wife, Mother, Marney, Sister, and Aunt went home to be with her Lord and Savior on December 13, 2025, after a valiant struggle with cancer. Throughout her illness, and death, she continued to live out her faith, sharing her kind spirit and love with those closest to her.

Marla was born July 27, 1957, to Norman and Ruth Guess in Eastland, Texas. She married her childhood sweetheart, Wayne Poynor on July 15, 1978, in Big Lake, Texas where they were lifetime residents and raised their son Shawn. After Wayne’s passing, Marla later found joy again with Britt Poynor, brought together through shared laughter and companionship. She married Britt on August 25, 2001, in Eldorado Texas.

Together, Marla and Britt lovingly blended their two families into one. Their children formed a close bond that eventually led them into business partnership—one that brought Marla immense pride and deep joy.

Marla had a servant’s heart and lived her life devoted to God, family, and others. She was an active member of First Baptist Church in Big Lake, where she served faithfully as church clerk, led G.A.s, and taught the four-year-old Sunday School class. She especially loved singing in church and could often be heard on Sunday mornings “making a joyful noise.”

She followed her father, Norman, into the family business and spent more than 40 years working alongside her daddy and sisters, ultimately becoming dealer principal at Glasscock Chevrolet. Marla treasured sharing an office with her best friend and sister, Janet, and flatly refused to ever move into separate offices. A master of numbers, she diligently ensured the books balanced to the penny every month. Janet, Susan, and Shawn learned quickly to mind their spelling, as Marla kept a dictionary on her desk to verify the few words she didn’t already know by heart.

She and her sisters shared an unshakable bond, rooted in family, faith, shared history, and a lifetime of showing up for one another. Even after Marla became ill, the four of them continued their regular trips together, creating memories and shared experiences that became deeply treasured.

Marla was preceded in death by her first husband, Wayne Poynor; her parents, Norman and Ruth Guess; her mother- and father-in-law, D.D. “PeeWee” and Darlyne Poynor; and her father-in-law, Johnny Poynor.

She is survived by her loving husband, Britt Poynor, of Big Lake, and the family they built together: Shawn and Anita Poynor, Clay and Joy Butler, Casey and Krystle Poynor, and Megan and West Herbert, all of San Angelo. Known lovingly as “Marney,” she leaves behind eleven grandchildren she cherished deeply: David Wayne Poynor, Dylan Poynor, Evelyn Poynor, Rhett Butler, Brynn Butler, Ryen Poynor, Allie Poynor, Kye Herbert and Lauren, Taven Espinosa, Paris Espinosa, and Dallas Britton Herbert, as well as her great-grandchild, Briggs Herbert.

She is also survived by her sisters and their families: Susan and Mike George, Janet Guess, and Lori and Terry Jones; her mother-in-law, Zulean Poynor; her sister-in-law, Penny and Sam Whitten; a very special aunt, Carolyn and Walt Templin, uncle Howard and SueAnn Swaringin; and her many nieces and nephews, along with extended family members and dear friends who shared a close bond with Marla.

Marla will be available for viewing on Thursday, December 18, 2025 from 4:00 P.M. - 6:00 P.M. at the First Baptist Church in Big Lake.

The Celebration of Marla’s life will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, December 19th, at First Baptist Church in Big Lake, officiated by her pastor and friend, Rev. Gerald Bastin. The burial will follow at Glen Rest Cemetery in Big Lake.

Pallbearers for the service will be her nephews: Edward Rivas, John George, Brad Wachsmann, Casey Kohutek, Paul Jones, Jeremy Baldwin, Justin Clark, and Rocky Robles.

Memorials, if desired, may be made to the First Baptist Church Big Lake Memorial Fund, or West Texas Boys Ranch.
