Martha Escamilla Torres

Martha Escamilla Torres, aged 77 and longtime resident of Menard, TX, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, September 3, 2025 of advanced cancer at Shannon Hospital in San Angelo, TX.

Martha was born on September 28, 1947 at Shannon Hospital in San Angelo to Carmen and Jesse Escamilla.

Martha was raised in Melvin, TX and parts of Concho County when she was young. Her fondest memories of childhood were fishing in the creeks with her family as a young girl, seeing her mother and grandmother cook, and watching her Dad play baseball. Martha enjoyed playing softball then, as well.

Martha met the love of her life, Senon Torres, in Eola, TX, while working in the fields nearby with her family around 1961. Senon was drafted in the US Army in November of 1963 and sent to Fort Carson, CO. Martha and Senon were later married in Concho County, TX in September of 1964. Martha moved to Fort Carson, CO where Senon was stationed. Martha enjoyed walking Colorado Springs, CO in skirts and high heels, from one side of town to the other. Martha gave birth to their first child, Larry in August 1965 in Fort Carson.

Then Martha's small family moved to Eola, Texas after Senon finished his military duty. There they mourned the death of their son, Larry, in January of 1966. Later, Martha and Senon would rejoice in the birth of their children, Mary and Marty.

Martha and her family moved again to Menard, TX in 1969 to help her health improve. For a time, Martha had a job operating the elevator at the Menard Hospital in Menard. Soon after, Alicia and Jeannette were born, and then Martha's family was complete. Martha was, from then on, a housewife.

Martha will be remembered for her fondness of walking, road trips, trains, music, singing, movies, reading novels, good food, fish on Fridays, and cooking. Martha made some of the best fried chicken, pecan pie, and other meals that many people have ever had. She loved getting phone calls, flowers, pictures, cards, and letters from everyone she knew. Martha always cheered on her family and told them to keep chasing their dreams.

But most of all, Martha always prayed the rosary for everyone she cared about. She was fiercely loyal to those she loved. Martha had a steadfast, fighting spirit. She was the strongest willed person we ever knew, and in the end, Martha never lost her faith or her will to live.

It was a true blessing that throughout her recent illness, Martha never felt any pain. We are comforted in that thought. As Martha would have said to anyone while parting, "No goodbyes. Say, ‘See you later.’" We will never forget you or your courage, Martha. You will always be with us in our hearts. We will always love you. “See you later.”

Martha is survived by her loving husband of nearly 61 years, Senon Torres of Menard; her children (Mary Fuentes and Marty Torres of Menard, and Jeannette Hiteshew of Austin), her

grandchildren (Jonathon Marin of San Angelo, Erin Hiteshew [husband Adam Kranz] of Austin, Morgan Hiteshew of Austin, and Jacqueline Mastroianni [husband Brenden Pando] of Colorado Springs, CO), her siblings (Mary, Mary Jane, Elizabeth, Esther, Johnny, Lupe, and Gilbert), along with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.

Martha was preceded in death by her children (Larry and Alicia Torres), her parents (Jesus Escamilla, Jr. and Carmen Alexander), and her siblings (Josie, Joe, and Linda).

Martha's immediate family would like to thank all of those who have shown love and support for her family during this sad time. They are so grateful for the outpouring of kindness. Many blessings to you all.
