Nona “Nan” Chenault Townley, 81, rejoiced in Heaven on August 13, 2025, in San Angelo, Texas.
Nona was born on July 14, 1944, to John and Odell Chenault in Paducah, Texas. Her childhood and teenage years were idyllic growing up in the small Texas town. She was raised in the First Methodist Church in Paducah and developed a strong faith and a servant’s heart. Her school years were filled with sports, school dances and driving around the ‘square’. Summers were a time for swimming and vacationing with her siblings and her beloved and fun Aunt Wivie and John Heim.
On June 2, 1963, Nona married her high school sweetheart and love of her life, Warren Townley in Paducah. The newlyweds lived in Abilene for several years where Nona worked for the Texas Highway Dept and Warren finished college. During their time in Abilene Nona and Warren made many close friends and formed friendships that carried over into Nona’s final days.
In 1967 Nona and Warren welcomed their only child, Missy, into the world and soon after moved to Wall, Texas where Warren coached. Nona initially stayed home with Missy but quickly started doing some bookwork for the Wall Coop Gin. She loved numbers and was a whiz at bookkeeping. Eventually, Nona began working for Wall ISD. First as the principal’s secretary and later as the business manager in the superintendent’s office where she remained until she retired. They were active members of the Wall Brethren Church where Nona taught Sunday School and served on the Board of Elders for many years.
Staying home and sitting idle were not in Warren and Nona’s vocabulary. The two had so many wonderful friends and spent endless hours playing poker, water skiing, going on snow skiing trips and traveling to different countries. Together Nona and Warren built a life filled with love, fun, devotion and faith. As an only child, Missy knew Nona and Warren as her first best friends. The three of them had so much fun together and shared so much love.
In 2001 Nona and Warren moved to Canyon, Texas to be near Missy and her family. Nona “Nan” was devoted to her grandchildren and never missed a game, rodeo or banquet. Her three grandchildren were her world. She put everything else to the side if one of her grandchildren needed her. Nan could do it all in their eyes!
She was preceded in death by Warren and both of her parents.
She is survived by her daughter Missy Harris and Randy Krupala of San Angelo; grandchildren, Pryce Harris and Bailee, Jake Harris and wife Kipty, Addi Harris; great granddaughter Vivian Kate, all of Canyon; siblings Carol Greear of Rogers, Ark and Steve Chenault of Plano.
The family would like to thank Monica, Monica and Cynthia for lovingly caring for Nona in her final days. Missy will never forget the support and sense of peace their presence brought.
A private service will be held for Nona by her family. A memorial reception celebrating the lives of both Nona and Warren will be held in San Angelo at later date to be announced.
The family suggests that donations be made to Alzheimer’s Association, Meals for the Elderly or a favorite charity.
