Peggy Payne, age 101, of San Angelo, TX received her glorious wings on June 4, 2025.
She was born in Brackettville, TX on January 14, 1924, to John (Counti) and Elsa Basquez. She married Albert Payne Jr., who has preceded her in death, on June14, 1946. Through that wonderful union, she left behind Robert Payne (son), Mary Payne (daughter), Albert Payne (son) and wife Shirley (Johnson) Payne, Rosetta Payne Ross (daughter), Lorenzo Payne (son), Glenn Payne (son) (Mildred Petterson) and JoAnn Payne (daughter). Grandchildren are Jeanette Payne, Shaniqua Gray (Nathan), LaShanda Wiggins (Elijah), LaKeisha Lowe (Marqus), LaEmma Walker, Jasmine Payne, Sonya White, Tiffany, Brittany Payne, Briana Payne, Samuel Payne, Maurice Payne, Robert Payne, Jr, Andre Payne, Tevin Payne, Aliyah Payne-Blacker (James), as well as a host of great grandchildren and great great grandchildren.
Peggy Payne was honored in January 2020 as the eldest matriarch of the Black Seminole Indians. She was commemorated by the United Warriors Band of the Seminole Nation/John Horse Band, along with the Warren Perryman Foundation for Native American Research, in recognition of her lifelong dedication to preserving the rich heritage and legacy of her people. Her strength, wisdom, and unwavering spirit served as a guiding light for generations. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
Throughout her life, she was a dedicated mother who doted on all her children. She was so loving, patient, caring, and kind. She was a happy homemaker who loved cooking, sewing, and gardening.
In her earlier years, she graduated from high school in Musquez, Coh and received a bachelor’s degree in economics from the City of Mexico.
A visitation will be held on Friday, June13, 2025 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at Harper Funeral Home. A funeral service is scheduled for Saturday, June 14, 2025, at 10:00 AM at Harper Funeral Home Chapel and burial to follow at Lawnhaven Memorial Gardens.
