Phyllis J. Halfmann Smith, 77. Ft. Stockton, Tx. went to be with the Lord on April 30 in San Angelo, Texas following a brief illness. She was born in Ballinger, Texas October 28, 1947, to Alex and Geraldine Halfmann of Wall, Texas. Phyllis graduated from Wall High School in 1966 and attended Angelo State University. Phyllis lived and worked in cities all over Texas. Especially in the Houston area. She worked in Rosharon, Tx. for ‘Hold That River”. A company that built and installed walls along the Mississippi river to keep the shoreline from erosion. In 1979 she and her family moved to Ft. Stockton, Tx. She learned to love the hot dry and arid climate. Phyllis was employed at Enron for 23 years. Phyllis was the last employee to leave the Ft. Stockton office. When She Locked the door behind her that was the end of Enron. Following that, for 2 years she drove to Roswell, New Mexico and worked in that Enron office. Realizing she lost all her retirement in Enron stock she went to work for the Texas Dept. of Corrections. She was the supervisor of the prison mail room. Entertaining her family and friends with stories from the letters that were read in the letters coming into the prison and going out, of course never revealing names. She retired after 12 years with the state and declared herself retired at age 63 yrs. In 1986 she married the love of her life, Mickey Smith. Mickey saved her life and was the shoulder she could lean on. In the meanwhile, her son, Jack C. Burleson, died in 1988, and her daughter Julie A. Burleson died in 1991. Phyllis and Mickey loved to travel. If Mickey said let's go to Hobbs, New Mexico gambling she quickly learned to leave dirty dishes in the sink and dirty clothes in the laundry. They loved each other and just drove along the highway, enjoying each other's company. Sometimes not even knowing where they were going. Phoenix, Az., To NACAR races, Las Vegas, NV., gambling, San Antonio, Tx., visiting kids and grandkids or Washington state, visiting his brother. They also enjoyed and supported many activities in Ft. Stockton. The Ft. Stockton Silhouette Shooters sponsoring the 1987 International Silhouette Shooters Championships. Phyllis won 1st place in the revolver Class B shooters. Phyllis was a member of St. Anges Catholic Church, Ft. Stockton Senior Center quilting group, First Baptist Church Ladies Bible Study group and served on the Ft. Stockton Cemetery Advisory Board for 32 years. Phyllis and her mother, Geraldine, cut, pieced and quilted hundreds of quilts. Which was given freely to friends and family for all occasions. Phyllis especially liked making baby quilts. The last quilt she was working on is a Wall Hawks T-Shirt quilt for her brother Brian and sister-in-law, Rhonda. Made from Wall Hawks t-shirts with her niece's names on the back. Phyllis’ best friends were her sisters, brothers and her first cousins, (especially the Gully girls) Many fun times were shared by all of them. Going to AJRA Junior rodeos to gamble in Wendover, Nevada and WinStar Casino in Oklahoma with her mother, aunts, sisters, cousins and friends. She just loved being with her sisters and cousins. Fun was had by all. Phyllis always had a smile and a friendly hello. She loved her friends, and they loved her. She was preceded in death by husband Mickey, her children, Jack and Julie Burleson, her parents, Alex and Geraldine Halfmann and a very special great niece, Hadlee A. Holik. Survivors include her brothers; Bobby Halfmann and wife, Sharon, of Wall, Bruce Halfmann of San Angelo, and Brian Halfmann and wife Rhonda of Wall. Her Sisters, Pam Stokes, of Wall and Priscilla Halfmann of San Angelo. Nieces: Helen Halfmann Harris of Glyfada, Greece, Courtney Stokes Hambight and husband, James of Dry Ridge, Kentucky, Casi A. Halfmann and husband Brad of Rusidoso, New Mexico, Brianne Killam and husband Duane of Wall, Shyanne Holik and Husband Jason of Wall. Nephews: Tyler Halfmann and wife Laci of Wall, Justin Halfmann and wife Lisa of San Angelo. Uncle and aunt: Alan and Marilyn Halfmann of Olfen and Aunt Kathy Halfmann of Olfen. Great nieces: Paige Hambright of Columbus, Ohio, Addisyn and Lexi Killam,of Wall, Kylee and Maggie Holik, of Wall. Great nephews: Karter Killam, Jaxon Holik. Sutton and Stockton Halfmann of Wall and Colt Halfmann all of Wall and Wyatt Halfmann of San Angelo. Great niece: Ree Halfmann of Wall. She is also survived by numerous cousins and many, many friends. The rosary will be at 10:00 A.M., Monday, May 5, 2025, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church. The Funeral Mass will follow at 10:30 A.M., Monday, May 5, 2025, at St. Ambrose Catholic Church. The burial will be 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, May 6, 2025, at East Hill Cemetery in Fort Stockton, Texas. Pallbearers for the service will be Tyler Halfmann, Duane Killam, Jason Holik, Truman Rivera, Gary Clayton and Mike Tyrrell.
