Richard Allen Johnson

Richard Allen Johnson, 86, of Robert Lee, Texas, passed away peacefully on June 15, 2025. Born on October 8, 1938, in Kosciusko, Mississippi, he was the beloved son of C.L. and Kathleen Johnson.

Richard lived a full and generous life, deeply rooted in family, faith, and a lifelong commitment to serving others. He is survived by his devoted wife, Suzann Johnson, and his loving children: Shannon Skipworth McCown and husband Ron, James Paul Skipworth and wife Cynthia, Lance Fisher and wife Pilar, Darren Fisher and wife Christina, and Kelly Nichols and wife Mendy. He is also survived by his sister, Carolyn Davis, whose husband Butch preceded him in death, and his brother, Mike Johnson and wife Ronda. He was preceded in death by his brother, Jack Johnson and wife Billy, and his sister, Joan Burns and husband Paul.

A proud grandfather, Richard cherished his grandchildren: Justin Skipworth, Daniel Nowlin, Bailey Grimes, Kandace Arthur and husband Billy, Jonathan Skipworth, Casey Skipworth, Jordan Nichols and wife Julianne, Hannah Nichols, Paul Fisher, and Liam Fisher. He was also blessed with great-grandchildren whom he loved dearly: Kya and Remington Skipworth, Noah and Naomi Tijerina, and Aurora and Blain Arthur. Richard also shared a lifelong and meaningful connection with the remaining members of the Jet and Ruth Hood family, who were like family to him and remained close throughout his life.

A man of deep Christian faith, Richard loved studying scripture and was dedicated to teaching the adult men’s Sunday school class each week. His quiet strength, gentle wisdom, and unwavering belief in the Lord left a lasting impression on all who knew him. His life was a reflection of humility, character, and grace.

Richard found great joy in silhouette shooting, hiking, and spending time in his gun house. He especially loved being with his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Whether it was watching a good western, cheering on local high school football teams, or simply sitting and talking with his family, those moments were the ones he valued most.

He devoted much of his life to working with children, a calling that brought him immense pride and fulfillment. Over the course of 55 years, he competed in rifle and pistol matches across Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, California, Colorado, and Oklahoma. While he earned countless awards during those years, his greatest pride came from the 49 years he spent coaching and mentoring junior shooters through 4-H clubs across Texas. Teaching firearm safety and marksmanship was never just about skill for Richard — it was about building character, responsibility, and confidence. He took particular joy in coaching his sons, grandsons, and granddaughters, and watching them grow and succeed.

Richard Allen Johnson will be remembered not just for what he did, but for who he was — a man of honor, integrity, faith, and enduring love. He was a teacher, a protector, and the rock of his family.

A visitation will be held on Thursday, June 19, 2025, at Robert Lee Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, from 5:00-7:00pm. Funeral Service will be held on Friday, June 20, 2025, at Robert Lee Baptist Church, at 10:00am. Burial to follow at Robert Lee Cemetery.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to Bart and Marty Grimes for always being there for Richard, no matter what he needed. Your kindness and unwavering support meant the world to him and to those who loved him. Special thanks also go to Concho Hearts Hospice and the Robert Lee Care Center for their compassionate care and support during Richard’s final days.
