It is with deep love and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Terry Joe Clingan, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and friend. Terry passed away on August 19, 2026, just three days after celebrating his 73rd birthday. He was born on August 16, 1953, in San Angelo, Texas.
Terry met the love of his life, Sandy Allen, in San Angelo, and they shared 47 wonderful years together. They built a life filled with love, laughter, family, Texas Rangers games, UT football, and more concerts than they could count. Together, they raised their children, Katy and Dusty, and Terry worked hard to love, protect, and provide for his family.
Terry had a personality that could fill a room. He loved a good sense of humor, a good tequila, the blues, and the smell of fresh sawdust. He took great pride in his woodworking, and if you mentioned a project, you could bet he would have it built within days. He was a perfectionist who liked things done right and loved knowing all the details. His famous response was, “I’ve researched that.” And chances were, he really had.
Terry was an instigator, storyteller, problem-solver, and someone who could make you laugh even when he was driving you a little crazy. He enjoyed the gym, his daily walks, and especially time with his beloved puppy, Lacey.
Most of all, Terry loved his family. He was deeply loved in return by his wife, children, grandchildren, siblings, extended family, and friends. He made an impact on so many lives, and those who knew him will remember his humor, his strong personality, his generosity, and all the little things that made him simply Terry.
Terry is survived by his wife, Sandy; daughter Katy Burnup and husband Tommy; son Dusty Clingan and wife Angela; and his grandchildren, Jolie, and Piper Owens, and Van Clingan, who were the loves of his life. He is also survived by his sister Candy Richards and Jerry; brother Sam Whitten Jr. and wife Penny; sister-in-law Sherry Rogers; brother-in-law Charles Allen; and numerous nieces and nephews who adored him. Terry also leaves behind lifelong friends from his many years at Targa, relationships he continued to cherish long after retirement.
Terry was preceded in death by his mother, Peggy Whitten; Sam A. Whitten; father, John Clingan; mother-in-law, Cathryn Allen; and father-in-law, Charles Allen.
There will never be another Terry. We will miss his stories, his teasing, his advice, his laughter, and, of course, hearing, “I’ve researched that.” Most of all, we will miss having him here.
Terry was deeply loved, and he will be deeply missed. His memory will live on in all of us who were lucky enough to love him. Rest easy, Terry. We love you always.
Viewing and visitation will be Sunday, August 23, 2026 at Harper Funeral Home from 3-5 pm. Graveside service will be Monday, August 24, 2026 at Lawnhaven at 10am.
