Vivian Pauline Lawhon Love Brooks Harper (Brooks) age 92, passed away peacefully on October 5, 2026. Polly was born on December 29, 1933, at Shannon Hospital in San Angelo, Texas, to John Worth and Vivian Spiller Lawhon. She spent her early years growing up on a ranch outside Eldorado, Texas, and then on the family ranch southwest of Marfa, Texas.
Polly graduated from the Hockaday School in Dallas and attended the University of Texas at Austin where she was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She married Wert Eugene Love III, a neighboring rancher from Marfa. She laughingly claimed to have married fence lines. They began their married life together at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, where they had their first child, Worth Lorraine Love. Eventually they moved back to Marfa where Wert took up ranching full time and where their second child, Wert Eugene Love IV (Chip) was born in Fort Davis, Texas. Tragically, at age 26, Polly lost her husband, Wert, in an airplane crash.
Later, Polly was invited to be a beauty pageant judge at the Fort Stockton Water Carnival where Conoly and Peggy Brooks held a reception in their home that Polly attended. At this reception, Peggy introduced Polly to Conoly. One week later, Peggy was tragically killed in a car accident leaving Conoly with two young children, Beverly Beth Brooks and Joe Montgomery (Monte) Brooks. On November 4, 1961, Conoly and Polly married and had two more children, Louellen and Conoly Ouzts Brooks, III.
Conoly and Polly enjoyed 29 wonderful years of marriage, family, and community in Fort Stockton where they completely devoted themselves to each other and to their six children (the Troop). Polly served the First Presbyterian Church as an elder, children’s Sunday school teacher, and youth group leader. “The Troop” attended church every Sunday. She helped initiate the return of the Water Carnival, which is still in production today. She served on the Chamber of Commerce, the Pink Ladies Hospital Auxiliary, Scouts and many other community and school organizations. After 29 years of marriage, Conoly unexpectedly died, leaving Polly a widow again at age 57.
Two years later, General George R. Harper (Bob), an A&M friend of her first husband, re-entered her life and they married on New Year’s Eve in 1994 making San Angelo their new home. She was instrumental in conceptualizing the commons area, the prayer room, and the courtyard of the First Presbyterian Church, San Angelo. Mostly she enjoyed bringing the family together, socializing, and grandparenting. After 17 years, her third husband, Bob, passed away, leaving Polly a widow again.
Polly is best remembered for her exuberant, joyful spirit, sense of humor, and quick wit. She loved people, children, pets, art, antiques, gardening, and going to the ranch.
