Willie Eugene Askey

March 16, 1927 — March 16, 2024

Willie Eugene “Buster” Askey was born in Luling, Texas on March 16th, 1927, to Mckinnley Brawley and Novella Huff. He was adopted as a baby by Ira and Anna Sloan Askey after the death of his mother. He went to school in Luling and upon his graduation entered the Army during World War II. He served in the Pacific Theater seeing the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki. After his time in the service, he spent some time in California before returning to Austin, Texas where he graduated from Huston Tillotson with a degree in Mathematics. While there he married Homa Jean Hardaway and to this union his son Richard A. Askey was born. He later moved to Big Lake Texas where his father lived. Here, he met and married Evangeline Huff. He went to work as a truck driver for McVean and Barlow building pipelines in Nevada, Arizona, California, and New Mexico. He later went to work for Halliburton, then Turner Bros. in Big Lake before retiring.

His passion was coaching girls’ softball along with Jim Phillips. He took “his girls” all over West Texas for games. He also was a huge fan of Reagan County Athletics. If he ever met a stranger, they left as acquaintances, and many became close friends. His nickname at Freedom’s Path apartments was “The Mayor” as he was usually out in front to greet all who entered.

He was preceded in death by his parents, 7 siblings, his son Richard A. Askey and his wife Evangeline “Vannie” Askey. He is survived by his daughter Suzanne Sarrell of Kerrville. Grandchildren Angela (Purnell) Williams, Stephanie (Bobby) Jones and Steven Askey all of Austin, Allan (Tara) Harrison of Kerrville. 11 Great Grandchildren, and 12 Great-Great Grandchildren.
